Towards the end of his artistic life, Matisse enjoyed a new take on the theme of dance and the figure in this print is said to be inspired by the American dancer Katherine Dunham who visited Matisse’s studio so he could sketch her dancing. The resulting cut-out which inspired the later lithographs is a feast for the eyes- sharp lines and black mixed with curved shapes and colour- this is something that will forever catch your attention in the house.
